Despite repeated appeals by the political leaders, the spate of suicide attempts in support of Telangana State is continuing to alarm.

One more youth set himself afire on Friday in Nalgonda district, taking the number of such incidents in less than a week to nine. So far, four persons themselves and five — including a girl — were injured trying to self immolate.

In the latest incident, the youth poured kerosene on his head and set himself ablaze. He was rushed to the area hospital and is critical.

Telangana activist M Anil Kumar had hanged himself in Mehbubnagar on Thursday protesting against the disunity among the political leaders of the region leading to the delay in the formation of the State.

The incidents are reported from five districts since pro-Telangana candidates swept by-elections to six Assembly constituencies, giving a new fillip to the movement.

Meanwhile, the Telangana Joint Action Committee took out a rally in Hyderabad to urge the youth of the region not to take the extreme step. The rally was taken out from Sundraiah Vignana Kendra to Indira Park where the Speaker made emotional appeal to the youth and the students not to lose hope and continue their fight.

Tension spread when some of the participants of the rally tried to damage the statue of Telugu Desam founder NT Rama Rao and uprooted the flexies of the Congress leaders against the anti-Telangana policies of the two parties.

TJAC convenor Prof Kodanda Ram, TRS legislators and several other leaders participated in the rally.

BJP president G Kishan Reddy sat on a day’s fast in Warangal to appeal to the youth not to end their lives but to intensify their struggle for Telangana State. “We can not achieve Telangana through suicides”, he said.

In another development, TDP president N Chandrababu Naidu met party leaders from Telangana region to explore options. The party leaders have organised themselves under the banner of Telugu Desam Telangana Forum. They urged Naidu to take a more clear stand in support of Telangana State.

TDP is reeling under the impact of defeats in the recent bypolls, where it lost three of its seats to Telangana supporters.

After meeting Naidu, Forum convenor E Dayakar Rao said the TDP was not against Telangana State and it had already written a letter to the Centre to this effect. “But some leaders are deliberately targeting TDP as if it was responsible for the delay in formation of Telangana State,” he said.
